RESEARCH ART WORKSHOPS
BASED ON THE COMIC BY ŽELJKO ZORICA ŠIŠ, THE LOVE AFFAIR OF FAHRIJA P.
Where: Center KNAP, Ivanićgradska 41 a, new art studio, 1st floor (classroom 2)
What: a cycle of 4 multi-layered research and creative workshops for adults, initiated by Željko Zorica’s comic The Love Case of Fahrija P. from 1984. Each workshop has its discoursive and creative part: lectures, analysis and critical reflection on the topic, as well as drawing, writing, making collages and more.
When:
Saturday 07.03.2026. od 12 do 14.30
Saturday 14.03.2026. od 12 do 14.30
Saturday 21.03.2026. od 12 do 14.30
Saturday 28.03.2026. od 12 do 14.30
Why: We want to deconstruct Zorica’s the comic by noticing the elements of it’s content: the former Yugoslavia and Croatia as migrant countries, illegal/legal migration today, the processes of obtaining work permits for foreigners, violence against those who are different, smoldering fascism, intolerance and more.
We will process the content in correlation to foreign workers and hosts interested in the research processes aiming to form new, fresh textual and visual notes and drawings, including comics. We will consider the mutual influences that various aspects of art, such as motifs, atmosphere, characters, plot, stereotypes, references, etc., have on each other. After the workshop, participants will be empowered to present important accents for conveying the message, depending on the medium in which they work.
We look forward to the opportunities to exchange our experiences with supportive socializing, research and learning aiming to mutually enrich us all through intergenerational and intercultural exchange.
Workshops are free of charge, organizer provides art supplies and refeshment. The number of participants is limited.

PREDSTAVLJANJE LIKOVNE GRUPE ZZOT (1984.-1995.)
ČITANJE I ANALIZA STRIPA LJUBAVNI SLUČAJ FAHRIJE P., 1984., ŽELJKA ZORICE-ŠIŠA
Vodi: HELENA KLAKOČAR
Asistencija: ANA JANJATOVIĆ-ZORICA I ZDRAVKO POPOVIĆ
Grupa ZZOT, osnovana osamdesetih, okupila je prijatelje likovnjake/inje (Ž.Zorica, H.Klakočar, M. Vukadin, N. Haramija, K. Mavar, M. Manojlović, M. Sekulić) oko oblikovanja stripova, animiranih filmova, izložbi i instalacija.
Osebujnim likovnim jezikom, grafičkim oblikovanjem, koji vuče korijene iz ekspresionizma i „bad paintinga“ ZZOT otvara pogled u multimedijalni svijet suvremene umjetnosti. Svojim stilom tehnikom i zahvatima radovi grupe ZZOT izmiču dosadašnjim okvirima jugoslavenske animacije i stripa i daju nove mogućnosti grafičkoj umjetnosti.
“Zorica besramno upotrebljava veru u žanrovske obrasce.
On je s one strane ruba, gonič i progonjeni.“

MIGRACIJE DANAS

PROJEKT SJAJNE NITI 2 – INTEKULTURNA RAZMJENA I POVEZIVANJE

The workshop is led by academic graphic artist, author of comics and graphic novels HELENA KLAKOČAR (BIH, SLO, HR, NL) and her collaborators. In addition to depicting her personal migrant experience, in her numerous works, Helena Klakočar is passionate about depicting displacement from home cultures and finding more humane ways to solve social problems related to migration and war. During the workshop, we will also address the position of women in the labor market in the migrant context of the Netherlands and Croatia.
The project involves performance artist and film curator TANJA VRVILO, whose work connects radical artistic practices with a special interest in the politics of aesthetics and the invisible history of film and theater avant-gardes. With the team of authors (Bartol, Burić, Milutinović, Marušić, etc.), Tanja created an intermedia theather performance in 2017 based on comics, texts and film by Željko Zorica Šiš.
Sociologist MARGARETA GREGUROVIĆ (Institute for Migration Research, Zagreb) will present data and key themes obtained and developed in the latest research related to foreign workers, their status and reception in the Republic of Croatia. The workshops will be attended by Zdravko Popović and the head of the Artless Studio, curator and sociologist Ana Janjatović-Zorica.

ZZOT GROUP
ŽELJKO ZORICA ŠIŠ: FAHRIJA P.’S LOVE AFFAIR, 1984.
Leader: HELENA KLAKOČAR
Assistants: ANA JANJATOVIĆ-ZORICA, ZDRAVKO POPOVIĆ
The ZZOT group, founded in the eighties, brought together friends and artists (Ž.Zorica, H.Klakočar, M. Vukadin, N. Haramija, K. Mavar, M. Manojlović, M. Sekulić) to design comics, animated films, exhibitions and installations.
With a distinctive visual language, graphic design, which has its roots in expressionism and “bad painting”, ZZOT opens a view into the multimedia world of contemporary art. With their style, technique and interventions, the works of the ZZOT group escape the previous frameworks of Yugoslav animation and comics and give new possibilities to graphic art. (Z. Đukanović)
ŽELJKO ZORICA ŠIŠ
Intermedia artist Željko Zorica (1957 – 2013) was universally versatile, always inexhaustible in creativity, dedicated to true artistic independence. He began working in the theater with the group Kugla glumište (1976), and later founded the comic strip group ZZOT, the theater groups Ulješura, Kačinsky Troup, and Uplašene žirafe. As an independent theater and film director, then a set designer, puppet creator, writer and illustrator, graphic designer, comic author, author and participant in happenings, Željko Zorica strongly marked almost four decades of contemporary art in Croatia, bringing playfulness of thought and freshness of ideas, as well as artistic content colored by activism and social engagement. He was a member of ULUPUH and HZSU. Zorica’s approach to art was oriented to activism as he encouraged cultural and social activities. He organized projects that included joint work of artists and non-artists, people with special needs, minorities, and supported educational content on new and current social problems (migration and refugee problems, education issues, minority issues, social stigmatization of the Others, gender issues, transition issues, hierarchical forms of organizing sports activities, and others). He also expanded communication and cooperation with civil initiatives, and problematized the responsibility of the wider social community.
LOVE CASE OF FAHRIJA P., 1984.
“Zorica shamelessly uses his faith in genre patterns. By imitating the genre, Zorica abolishes it, creating his own poetics.” (Zoran Đukanović).
A seemingly simple detective story that finds its motifs in cheap novels on crime and romance is presented through irony and surrealism. An ordinary lady seeks the professional help of a detective with a floppy ear. A fan of adult films approaches the job coldly and measuredly, suspecting an intriguing plot. An axe in the back ended the life of an illegal migrant, the alleged brother of the client. The story reveals a “protector” who trades illegal labor in Münich. We know what happened in Bavarian beer halls fifty years before the comic was created, and as it can be seen, the situation on the streets is not much better either in 80ies. Through an unexpected twist, we learn something more about the supposedly cold Germanic blood.
Let’s add that, according to Đukanović, Zorica’s main character, private detective Reiner Fass, “…crossed the line that separates the detective from the victim. He is on the other side of the edge, the chaser and the hunted.”
The tragic moment is often found in comic travesties by Željko Zorica. However, a relaxed, almost casual attitude towards the obviously tragic, turns into a travesty. It loses its obviousness. We constantly sense it, but we are separated from it by a ring of casual suspense. Let’s remember: “Victims hit by air from a ZOT gun can perceive the world around them and think, but they cannot move: they remain stiff as planks in a fence.” The ambivalence, the constant oscillation between the peace in the tone and the horror in the event makes us become irritated and calm at the same time. Calm in our dismay before that which we cannot control and which governs our lives. Some call this “it” fate, and Rainer Werner Fassbinder, in his own projection of the genre, called it melodrama. (Zoran Đukanović)
Speaking about the comics artists of the 80s, Bojan Krištofić says: “…their comics reflected the characteristic postmodern pop culture spirit of the 80s, felt mostly in the free play with different genres as narrative frameworks (crime thriller or noir was one of the most popular, followed by comic parody, and even travesty in the case of Mataković and Zorica) and in the pronounced, recognizable graphics that were often based on emphasized extremes between black and white, light and shadow, thus following, and sometimes anticipating, the experiences of some of the most prominent European and American authors.”

INTERMEDIALITY AND INTERCULTURALITY on the example of the play THE LOVE CASE OF FAHRIJA P.
The play The Love Case of Fahrija P. was based on motifs of comics and other works by the multimedia artist Željko Zorica Šiš (1957 – 2013). The creative team consisted of Zlatko Burić Kićo, Damir Bartol Indoš, Dragana Milutinović, Tanja Vrvilo, Hrvojka Begović, Dina Puhovski, Sven Jakir, Domagoj Jankovic, Miro Manojlović, Ivan Marušić Klif, Igor Hofbauer Hof, Henning Frimann Larsen, Peter Oliver Joergensen, Ana Janjatović Zorica. The costumes were made by Twins – Domagoj Štimac and Damir Begović, production by Culture of Change SC in Zagreb and Teatre &td in 2017.
Tanja Vrvilo will explain, among other things, how the visual identity and text of a comic that experiments with form and uses subversive content can be transformed into a dramatic text and situation.

MIGRATIONS TODAY
In recent years, Croatia has been experiencing parallel processes of emigration, and increase of immigration. However, we cannot judge whether we are an immigration country only by the number of immigrants, but also by the way of their inclusion in the society. The sociologist M. Gregurović sees the integration of foreigners as a process that is necessarily realized within local communities as a dynamic, two-way process of mutual adaptation of both foreigners and Croatian citizens. The amendments to the Law on Foreigners from March 2025 bring changes in the regulation of work and residence of foreign workers: extending the residence and work permit from one to three years, extending the stay after losing a job, tightening the conditions for employers, regulating the quality of accommodation, and more – which should improve the position of foreign workers in Croatia.

WOMEN’S POSITION IN THE LABOR MARKET, CASE STUDIES (NL,HR)
Conducted by: HELENA KLAKOČAR
Assistant: ZDRAVKO POPOVIĆ
In her works, Helena Klakočar examines her own nomadic experiences and the experiences of others, dealing with the diversity of cultures. She notices the inevitability of migrations and follows the behavior of newcomers and the assimilation that is often imposed on them. She notices character transformations in new circumstances, coexistence, the injustice of refugee fates, trauma, resistance and reconciliation. She deals with the acceptance of diversity, inter-ethnic appreciation and respect. She „captures“ women’s stories, particularly important to her, in her skillfully drawn scenes, illustrations and comics. Her graphic novel The Restless Sea was awarded at the largest European comics festival, in Angoulême (France), in 2000. It was declared the best comic by a foreign author, and received a special award from Radio France Info ‘‘for a documentary approach in the medium of comics’’.

PROJECT SJAJNE NITI 2 – INTECULTURAL EXCHANGE AND CONNECTING
It is a program aiming for a better integration of persons granted temporary protection and foreign workers. The main goal of the program is to connect with the local community by encouraging the exchange of experiences and mutual understanding.
The intention of the project is to participate in understanding multicultural identities, encouraging the formation of an inclusive, culturally plural community and reducing discrimination against culturally diverse people. According to Canadian theorist of multiculturalism Will Kymlicka, “it is important not only that people understand intercultural differences on a global level, but they also need to connect with people in the local community who are different from themselves”.
According to other theorists, the process of intercultural exchange provides intercultural experiential learning that makes it easier to understand people who have different values, beliefs and constructions of meaning.
The project is implemented with the support of the Peščenica Cultural Center – KNAP, the City of Zagreb and the Kultura nova Foundation.
